Building data into the Climate Technology Roadmap with NZTech

In Aotearoa New Zealand, the first Emission Reduction Plan and National Adaptation Plan both include commitments and actions related to data. These include:

  • ERP 9.2: Increase data collection and research to measure baselines and indicators;

  • ERP 12.5.2: Develop a strong data and evidence base;

  • NAP 3.1: Provide access to latest climate projections data; and

  • NAP 3.9: Complete the Data Investment Plan project

The second Emissions Reduction Plan (ERP2) is currently being developed and will be released by the end of 2024.

To integrate climate and technology expertise into the Government’s response to ERP2, MBIE and MfE have partnered with NZ Tech to develop the Climate Technology Roadmap, aimed at enabling the emissions reduction objectives outlined in ERP2.

Data serves as the linchpin for sustainable finance, reducing uncertainty and bias in investment and lending decisions related to adaptation and managed retreat. The Centre for Sustainable Finance (CSF) champions data as a critical enabler for private capital to lead the way to Net Zero by 2050. This notion aligns with the Sustainable Finance Forum's Roadmap for Action, emphasising trusted governance infrastructure for shared data and FinTech solutions for responsible financial systems.

CSF is excited to involve its partners and stakeholders in shaping this Climate Technology Roadmap, ensuring its practicality and relevance in the financial sector. Our collaborative effort with the Climate Technology Roadmap team culminated in a roundtable discussion in mid-August, where the role of data and sustainable finance in technology innovation and implementation of solutions for climate response and adaptation was central.
